I had a similar experience with my PS3. The optical drive just plain dropped dead. I suspect it was one too many scratched up PS2 games... I was surprised that I too received my same system back. I had read on line that I could expect a different PS3 to be returned. It almost made me regret deleting/clearing/formatting the hard drive.

But the restore actually worked. It was the first time I ever restored a backup, but dang it was slow.

I didn't mind paying $149 for the service. If I had any guts I would have looked into buying a drive on line... In any event, I agree - the service experience with Sony was first rate.
