I have softmodded many xbox's but I still prefer doing chips. The main thing I mod for is to be able to play emulators and watch movies so without a bigger hard drive there is no point to me in modding.
Softmod's do cause random errors sometimes which makes things difficult for the user. The main thing I like about chips is that there are 2-3 different ways to get access to the xbox if something goes wrong. If something goes wrong with a softmod you usually have to put in a chip to fix it or put in the game/exploit you softmodded it with (which doesn't always work for some reason).

Ever try to softmod an xbox? It's easier in some aspects-- if you don't upgrade the harddrive there is no need to even open the box. You can still load multiple bioses from the harddrive without the need to flash your chip. Chips are still the better solution, as the softmod has very rare occasions where the software will crash the xbox. I'm not sure if that ever happens with a chip.
